Klimis Antzakas is an Assistant Professor of the Department of Education and Social Work (former P.T.D.E. – Law 4610/2019) on the subject of Special Education emphasizing on Deaf Education. Furthermore, he manages Deaf Studies Unit of the Department of Education and Social Work of the University of Patras. His research interests focus on issues related to deaf education. Specifically, language development and literacy of deaf/hard of hearing students and linguistic analysis of sign language and its application in education, both in the context of bilingual education of deaf/hard of hearing studentsand in the general framework of inclusive education. In addition, research interests include subjects directly related to deaf education such as: language acquisition of children with hearing loss on both spoken and sign language,early intervention and support of deaf/hard of hearing children and their families, communication and accessibility for students as well as deaf/hard of hearing adults and the Deaf community, specific technologies for deaf/hard of hearing students, technological applications as well as ICT and their implementation in education, sign language teaching and sign language interpreters training. He has participated in research projects and has published papers both in Greece and abroad.

Short CV:

Klimis Antzakas has a PhD in in Human Communication (Sign Language Linguistics) from City University of London. His has a bachelor’s degree from the Department of Philosophy of Pedagogy and Psychology, University of Athens. He received a scholarship from National Foundation Scholarship (IKY) and did postgraduate studies at the City University of London (City University of London) where he obtained a master’s Diploma in Deaf Studies, Deaf Education. He worked for thirteen years as an expert in educational support of deaf and hard of hearing children in a service of ministry of education for the support of exceptional children (Center of Diagnosis, Differential diagnosis and Support)

Since 2018 he is an Assistant Professor at the University of Patras. He has also taught at the Hellenic Open University, the University of Nicosia, the City University of London and Roehampton University and the University of Patras (as visiting lecturer 2008-2011) and as invited lecturer at the University of Athens.

His research interests include deaf education and more specifically on language development and literacy of deaf/hard of hearing students as well sign linguistics. In addition, he participates in research programs related to digital recognition of sign language and sign language teaching both in school and in higher education. His work has been published in Greece and abroad.
